I make all the decisions, and my criteria are personal, subjective, even opinionated. If I like a merchant's site and think it fits my mix, I list it. If I don't like it for some reason, I don't list it. I have found many great online stores in my travels on the web, while others are suggested by visitors, including merchants who want to be listed. I do not claim to list only the best merchants or the best deals - there are too many I haven't even seen to be able to say that! But I'm confident that the stores I've listed are good ones, with good products, good service, and competitive prices. If I ever judge wrong, I'm sure to hear about it from my visitors! Do merchants pay to be listed in your directory? I do not sell advertising, although that might change if someone made a sufficiently interesting offer! In some cases, I trade links (especially with smaller sites), to help us both build traffic. In other cases, merchants offer sales commissions to sites that send visitors who end up buying something (this is called an affiliate program). I usually sign up if this is offered; I get commssions now and then which pay my expenses. This only happens when my listings help someone find something they like well enough to actually buy. In such cases I am never told who the customer is, just that a sale was made. What is the most popular page in BuckWorks? As this is written (July 2002) Plus Size Clothing receives more visits than any other page in the site, even more than the home page. This page is very useful for a market that's not well served by regular retail, and word is getting around. Back in March and April the Prom Dresses Advice article was the busiest in the site.
